New Toy

Posted by Andy Wong

This time it didn't cost a ridiculous amount. I paid little for this... but considering it's just starting to get replaced now, I think it's a bit much.

Going to play with this on Friday... got an event to go to.

Photo Exhibition

Posted by Andy Wong

This exhibition is happening at the Chinatown Multicultural Center this week.

Used a D3 with my 24-70. So much sharper than on the D300s, it seems the little change in pixel pitch makes a huge difference.

Photos in Darkness

Posted by Andy Wong

Photos taken in pitch black, with riled up subjects, where your camera is in constant danger of being touched, bumped, or smashed -.-

I did end up having to use a d7k, because the D300s battery died. Also, I used it with a Black Rapid strap, which was miles better than my stock strap. I think I'm going to get one sometime.

Kk... now for settings

I've seen many of these party photos before, and with a [relatively] short shutter speed like 1/60, the photos look terrible.

For this shot, I used my 24-70 at 24mm, f/5.0, and 1s shutter, ISO 400 with front-sync flash @ anywhere from 1/32 to 1/8 on my SB-900.

I kept the camera at the f/5.0, 24mm, and ISO 400 for most of the night. In a better venue I would have upped the ISO, lowered the flash, and possibly made the aperture smaller, but OSA is pretty ugly.

f/5.0 because autofocus is bad in the dark, as well as moving subjects

1s shutter for the moving lights.

ISO for exposure.

Front-sync because subjects tend to shy away from the camera, in their sweaty/greasy state. Just had to be careful to keep the camera there after the flash, otherwise the light trials might cover your subject

There was a guy that showed up at school today, wearing a "bazinga!" t-shirt. Weird, I didn't think there was anybody more socially inept than me. I spent 5 dollars to attend a dance in which I took photos... but they didn't come out too poorly at least. Correction. I took photos because I can't dance. Or... OSA dance, which is just jumping up and down for 3 and a half hours, to poor music.

Oh well. Litobro and RevSarovati did a bit of fancy dancing, that's about all that happens in an OSA dance.

Capital EX Parade: A 2 Hour Long Commercial

Posted by Andy Wong

Sigh... nothing interesting there, plus harsh late morning light.

In other news... I watched Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Pt. 2. "Meh" at best.

Post-Shoot Thoughts

Posted by Andy Wong

Editing is still my downfall. Annoying the crap out of me. There will be multiple color tones in the following photos.

Lighting, however, wasn't poor in these photos IMO. Shadows are not too harsh, and I especially like this first one. That reflector works magic. It was, however, aimed a little low in this photo. Getting hair exposed properly, however, is a fairly significant challenge. You have to make sure it isn't a big black blob, like some of these photos, yet you cannot overexpose the entire photo. Part of the reason that I have some problems with editing the hair is that I bumped the contrast up, as the sun was hitting the front element of the lens.

For future shoots, I will make sure to do them a little later in the day. And also, mosquito repellent is a must.

Model ~ Tzerina

The reflector helped a lot with the shoot. 5 o'clock sun in the middle of the summer is terribly harsh, and later and more mosquitoes would have appeared.
